citadel -- The traditional egyptian mosque had an open courtyard and covered “arcades”. Here you see the (restored) wooden ceiling along one fo the arcades. This style of mosque gradually phased out because it was expensive to maintain these open buildings because of the damage of wind, especially during sand storm season (March).
