Travel Travails

AUC buys our tickets to Cairo. They say that we can make a stop over where ever
we want, and we just pay the difference between the direct fare and the fare for
our itinerary. Fair enough.

We notified them that we wanted to stop over in Europe for 2 weeks.
It is meant to be our sanity break. 2 weeks with nothing left to
pack, no deadlines. Just hanging out. Ahhh, pure bliss.

The plan is to fly into Paris or Amsterdam. Those 2 were chosen
because the goal of this trip is to go to Belgium and tour
a few of the monastery breweries and in general drink some
of the best beer in the world, near or at where it is produced.

Flying into Brussels is prohibitive in both price and scheduling.
For instance, it would add approx $1k to EACH ticket AND require
a flight from Brussels to somewhere else, with a 6 hour layover
and then a flight into Cairo that arrives around 3am. Blech.

But flying into Amsterdam or Paris is cheap, they have decent
connections to Cairo, and are a relatively quick train ride
to Brussels.

Anyway, we have been communicating with the nice folks at AUC
and they told us we could do this if we want, but that luggage
rules will work against us.

If we fly “direct” from the US to Cairo, we fly under international
rules for luggage and weight restrictions.

That means that we are each allowed 2 bags with at 50lbs (each) for a
total of 200lbs. [Note, that sounds like a lot, but we have to
live out of those suitcases for up to a month until our shipment
arrives from Seattle.]

If we do a layover in Europe, we have to fly from our European
airport to Cairo under “European” rules. Which limit us to
1 bag of checked luggage and 40 lbs, for a total of 80lbs.

If they allow us to check 2 bags each, there is an additional
bag fee (not sure what that is) and a ~$4/lb fee.

So that is potentially 112lb * $4 = $448.

On top of the extra cost of the ticket, train fares, car rental,
hotels, food, beer (mmmm beer).

It is starting to get expensive.

Then there is the recommendation of the nice man from AUC that
said “You might want to consider going to Europe from Cairo
during one of your many AUC holidays….”

Which is fine if I can get the time off my job. (Assuming
I have a job).

Many decisions to make, too many unknowns.

Visitors to Cairo take note

I have read that visitors to Egypt are allowed to purchase 4 liters of alcohol duty free withing 48 hours of arrival. I have read conflicting reports on what one is allowed to bring along in personal baggage…
There is a duty free shop in the airport and a few others in Cairo (and other tourist destinations).

I have been instructing friends and family that if they come visit, the “cost” of their lodging at chez jack and kaddee will be 4 liters of alcohol. I’ll meet you at the airport, take you to duty free and I’ll even pay for the booze, but I’ll need your passport.

Today I found a link to the Egypt Free Shops. Not a great selection of single malts, but it is better than nothing and the prices are pretty good.

750 lbs

That is our unaccompanied air freight shipping allowance. It gets shipped to NYC, where it gets palletized and combined with other faculty members shipments, and then shipped on to Cairo
I don’t know if that means it is 750lbs FULL STOP, or if that is all that AUC will pay for, and if we go over, we pay the difference.

AUC has an arrangement with the Egyptian government:

They sign a letter of guarantee that all the items we are shipping over air freight will be taken out of the country by us when we leave. That means that everything we ship in is duty free.

If, for any reason, an item does not get shipped out, we would have to pay a duty (which is oftern in excess of 100% of the value of the item).

Even if an item breaks, we have to ship it home, or pay the duty.

750 lbs. We both use a lot of books in our day to day jobs. We will have to get as many as possible on CD-ROM.

It will be interesting.

Brush with Greatness

One of the things that AUC does it make it very easy for their faculty to get settled in their new environment. (Well as easy as possible). The AUC website has a For Sale section since there is a significant turnover in faculty every year (I believe it is on the order of 35 new American faculty).
Starting in April, departing faculty will start categorizing all their stuff and list items on the webpage that they don’t want to ship home. Or electrical/electronic devices that were purchased there and are 220v.

Anyway, I keep an eye on this site to see what people have. One gentleman, Tom, posted a list of items. I decided that we needed a few of those items and I started emailing back in forth with him.

In the process of all this, he gave me much worthwhile advice on where to live, where to shop, who to call when there are problems, etc.

Including, since we were buying a dishwasher from him, the advice that it would be easier to just get their apartment when we come over there. He gave me the email address of the gentleman who does the housing assignments so that we might ask about that.
So, being the nosy sort, I went to the AUC faculty page to see what Tom taught etc.

His full name is Tom Markus.

Turns out he is a Theatre instructor. He has also authored a few small books on the theatre and acting. He is has been a Director of various Shakespearean festivals and has had some supporting roles in movies and TV series.

He also had a small recurring part in one my favorite shows when I was younger: Dark Shadows!

Remember that one? It was a rather over-the-top soap opera built around the central character that was a vampire. Great stuff.

So, we will purchasing stuff, and potentially living in the same apartment, as “famous” actor!

Well, I am amused.

That is all.

Let the inanity commence!

Why this blog is here:

Kaddee, my beloved partner of 10 years, and I are moving from Seattle to Cairo for 2 years starting sometime in August 2006.

Kaddee was offered a visiting professorship at The American University in Cairo.

This weblog, and hers (coming RSN) are here to track our mundane, every days lives preparing for the move, and living in, Cairo.

Including all THE PREP required for the trip.

For just a little taste of that, stop looking at your computer for a second.

Take a look around you. Assuming you are at home, look at every single thing you see and realize that every last bit of it must fit into one of 3 categoris

  1. Sell
  2. Ship
  3. Store

Everything. That coffee mug. The books on the shelf. Everything on the walls. The cat/dog/ferret. The knick-knacks. (Or as a friend refers to them “shit-knacks”). The smoking monkey you got for Christmas. All of it. Every last bit of it.

I find myself looking at everything as I go about my day: Do I bring this? That has to come with us. Can I get one of those once I get to Cairo? Will it be cheaper or more expensive over there or perhaps not available? I am not paying to ship that
I don’t sleep so well anymore.

Anyway, all that is how I got here and came to start this blog.

Occasionally it might even be interesting or amusing, insh’allah. Whether you are laughing with me or at me, doesn’t really matter.
