Of meat, memories and magazines

We recently had 2 couples staying with us, at the same time.

They arrived about 3 hours apart.

It was enough time to get the first couple home, and unpacked. We went through “the bounty”.

They brought pork products. A whole Smithfield ham, and 10 pounds of chourico.

The chourico, I knew about, because I ordered it and had it sent to their house.

The ham was a STUNNING surprise. I hugged it to my chest and went to my happy place for a few minutes. I got misty.

  • I thought to myself “this is unbeatable”.

Then the 2nd couple arrived.

They brought a digital picture frame. Full of photos. From various parties that we have missed over the last 2 years. Including the “re-wedding” of our friends, the other couple that arrived earlier.

I was speechless and moved to tears.

When those 2 sets of guests left, a 3rd set arrived.

They brought seemingly simple stuff that was so appreciated.

  • Salami (YEA! MORE PORK)
  • Crossword puzzle magazines
  • Soduku magazines
  • MOTORCYCLE magazines. droool
  • yarn and knitting patterns

Silly, inconsequential stuff that had us giggling like children on christmas morning.

I am amazed, and so grateful, for everyone’s thoughtfulness.

Thank you all.

Making friends everywhere I go [The director’s cut]

[I originally pulled this post because I broke my cardinal rule: No posting under the influence. I got up the next morning and pulled it immediately. After reading I decided to let it stand as is. But, I have to admit, certain liberties with the facts were taken. Some people mentioned are composites, and some of the comments come from different events. Some are made up out of whole cloth. Enjoy 🙂 ]

We belong to the BCA. It is the British Community Association here in
Cairo. Any non-Egyptian can join, though only citizens of the Realm have
full voting rights.

We joined because the booze is cheap, the food is good (with lots of
pork choices and REALLY good curries.) and the company is usually
extremely witty.

Recently they had “British Pub Night.” They had imported some actual
British beer (a couple of bitters, Guinness, and a Boddington’s cream
ale”). The flyer said “dress in costume for the empire’s greatest moment
and win a prize!” Kaddee suggested dressing as Revolutionary fighters,
but we were unable to find the appropriate flint-locks.

Anyway,,,,

One night I was in there (the good Dr. was at Arabic classes at an
Arabic language school nearby) when the topic of conversation turned to
lineage etc. One particularly loud individual was talking about tracing
his roots back many years to the first person in his family to “learn a
trade”. He could “measure things”. So he became a blacksmith.

It was ok when the fellow Brits laughed at this. So I laughed, good
naturedly.

He looked at me and said, “You can bloody well laugh, you didn’t even
have a country then.”

Now, this bloke is one of those people that asks “Haven’t seen you in a
while, where have you been”. If you were so foolish as to reply, “Well,
we were in Belgium for 2 weeks”, he would reply “Why the fuck would you
go there?”.

The kind of guy who, when you would say, “we just got back from Italy”
would say, “ah I remember when Italy was WORTH going to, not like now.
It is all crap”.

The kind of guy who, when you would say, “we just spent a few days in
Luxor” would say, “Ah, I remember when a RESPECTABLE person could go
there and LEARN something”.

I, unwittingly, earned his undying hatred the first time he did this to
me. He asked where we had been, and I replied “We just got back from [i
can’t remember where] ” and he did his usual, “Why the hell would you go
there.”

The first thing that came to mind was “Well, at least it wasn’t
Ireland.”. His mate, who was sitting at his table burst into laughter.
The asshat, who I shall call “the asshat” said “I’m from Ireland.”.

To which I replied: “Well you know what I mean then.”

His mate nearly fell off his chair.

Fast forward to this evening.

When the asshat said “You can bloody well laugh, you didn’t even have a
country then” I replied:

Right. I am 100% Portuguese. I can trace my family back 600 years on the same island. You can trace your people back to, oh I don’t know, when the Romans ruled? Or the Normans, or was it the Saxons? Or when the Danes rules? Or was it William of Orange (the dutchman)? Or perhaps the”House of Windsor”, the germans? We colonial peasants have trouble keeping track of all the invaders of our oppressors.”

The silence was amusing. Except for “his mate” who respects us, I think, because we can “take the piss” and dish it out.

He laughed. As well as the Rhodesian.

I didn’t even mention the whole Stuarts and Roundheads.

Ah, the life on an ex-pat.

And then there were none….

We have made some good friends here. They are a diverse and fascinating group of people. [Now, I have many diverse and fascinating friends back in Seattle, but these people are different in a way. Their experiences differ from mine a great deal. They have traveled more than I have, for one thing. That is unusual for me. Anyway]

Being here for a second year has exposed us to a phenomenon I have taken to referring to as “saying goodbye at the wholesale level”.

There is a fairly substantial turnover every year here at AUC. There are visiting professors, graduate students, post-docs, various visiting fellows etc.

Some of them were easy to say goodbye to. That sounds harsh, but people come and go in one’s life. Some, while pleasant to have around, don’t leave a big hole when they leave.

June is filled with going away parties. We said goodbye to people that we are not likely to ever see again.

Now, one could argue that one never knows if one will see someone ever again. You, or they, could be hit by a bus and poof! they are gone forever.

But this is different. It is unlikely that we will see these people again even if life proceeds as “normal” and no one gets hit by a bus. They has dispersed to the 4 corners of the earth.

There are some that we will attempt to stay in contact with. Some that I really do hope to meet again someday, somewhere.

The last of those people left late last night. Our friend Craig, who went with us to Petra, flew home to NYC.

He came in with us last year. He was in our “cohort” or newbies. He is a video journalist and has traveled extensively. As a result he has some truly great experiences and stories. The man could easily drink on these stories for many years…

We have dined and drank beer and told stories and laughed together frequently.

Especially this last month or so. He stayed with us for a few weeks after he gave up his apartment.

I have the apartment to myself for the first time in several weeks, which is always kinda nice. But I know we will miss him.

I really hope we can get together now and again.

Good luck, Craig.

Is it hot in here….?

Somebody flipped the switch.

First was sandstorm season. Most days it was very pleasant.

Every now and then, the sand would get blown in off the desert and the temperature would soar into the 90s.

Then it would drop back down.

Then we had 2 or so weeks of very pleasant weather: mid 70s during the day, cooling down at night.

Then, WHAM. 95 degrees.

No gradual increase in temp. It went from 75 one day to 90 the next. We thought that maybe it was another sandstorm coming in and it would drop back down and resume a gradual increase in temp.

Nope.

It appears “spring” is here to stay.

Gaza sewage deaths

I read this news story today.

What is sadest about it is, is that I met a gentleman here in Cairo that was working on sewage treatment projects in Gaza (and elsewhere in Palestine). Until Hammas won an election and all US based foreign aid was cut off.

They had to abandon the project.

Aint politics grand.

[name snipped to avoid deportation] patted my wife’s ass

The good Doctor and I were at one of the many parties put on by one of the many ex-pats.

There were some “famous” people there. Famous being a relative term: authors, egyptologists, entertainers.

Anyway, there was one older gentleman there. He is rather well known in the world of Egyptology, but shall remain nameless. [The libel laws are very strong and swiftly applied in Egypt.]

As the good doctor passed this gentleman in the hallway, she got a firm, but gentle pat on the ass. The patter did not break stride in the conversation he was having with the person next to him. If you weren’t paying close attention, you never would have seen it.

She told me afterwards. We chuckled. She has joined a very large and distinguished group of women.

It is almost a rite of passage. heh.

Obligatory “Gee I haven’t posted in a while” post

There are some universal constants. One of them seems to be that people fall behind in their blogs.

It has been a busy time here, but not all that interesting. Just day to day life since we got back from the White Desert.

Kaddee was wrapping up the semester. I have been working. Nothing exciting.

The holidays (Western Christmas, Eid al Adha, Coptic Christmas, Coptic New Years) came and went.

Kaddee’s family arrived for 2 weeks. We went to Giza, and the Egyptian Museum, and Luxor/Valley of the Kings/Karnak/ Hetshepsut’s temple, Ibn Tuloun Mosque, the Khan etc.

Kaddee has some good write-ups of the visit.

Anyway, I will cull through some photos and put some up RSN.
